2013 Silver Garbage Award Winners

Silver Garbage Awards Swim Along The ‘Lagoon’; ‘Made In Jersey’ Sweeps Drama

It was not a good idea to spend the 2012-13 television season along a lagoon, or as a New Jersey lawyer, as “Blue Lagoon: The Awakening” and “Made In Jersey” dominated the 2013 Silver Garbage Awards winning nine and six prizes, respectively this year.
“Blue Lagoon: The Awakening” was Lifetime’s remake of the 1980 Brooke Shields cult classic “The Blue Lagoon”, won the Silver Garbage Award for Worst Miniseries, Made for Television Movie, or Special.  “Lagoon”, the second-most nominated program with 15 nominations this year, won five of the six Silver Garbage Technical Awards on September 14 at the Silver Garbage Creative Arts Awards.  “Lagoon” also won for Worst Ensemble, Directing, and Supporting Actress (Denise Richards).
“Lagoon” faced stiff competition in the Special Class Categories with “Mockingbird Lane”, Bryan Fuller’s failed NBC pilot remake of the 1960s sitcom “The Munsters”, which out of 14 nominations, won four awards, including Worst Remake or Spin-Off.  Jerry O’Connell and Eddie Izzard won for Worst Lead Actor and Supporting Actor, respectively for their respective roles as Herman and Grandpa Munster.
But the 2013 Silver Garbage Awards were not just made in a Lagoon or on Mockingbird Lane, but in Jersey as well, as CBS’s legal flop “Made in Jersey” won six awards, including Worst Drama and Worst New Show.
“It was the first casualty of the fall season,” said Silver Garbage Awards creator Bryan Curtiss.  “I’ve seen cases like this through my time with this awards.  CBS kept overplaying the promos to death, and the show was pretty bad.”
“Made in Jersey”, which led all programs with 18 nominations, won for Worst Actress  for Janet Montgomery, as well as Worst Supporting Actor for Kyle MacLachlan, Writing, and Directing.
On the Comedy Side, CBS’s failed comedy “Partners” edged out NBC’s “Animal Practice” for the top prize.
“Partners” was a comedy about a straight man and his gay male best friend, which after CBS cancelled it in November, removed the show from the People’s Choice Awards Ballot.
“It seemed that CBS wanted to distance themselves from being associated with the show, because the show wasn’t even funny,” Curtiss said.
“Partners” only other win was for Worst Writing in a Comedy.
“Partners” star David Krumholtz was snubbed in the highly competitive Worst Actor race when the nominations were announced in July.  “Animal Practice” took advantage and won Worst Actor honors for “Weeds” co-star Justin Kirk, plus Supporting Actress honors for the non-human cast member, Crystal the Monkey, Worst Ensemble, and Worst Directing.
Other big winners included Whitney Cummings for Worst Actress in a Comedy for both of her cancelled shows, “I Love You, Mean It, Whitney Cummings” and “Whitney”; Robin Thicke and Cornell “Nelly” Hayes for Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Guest Actor, respectively for BET’s “Real Husbands of Hollywood”; “The Talk” co-host Sheryl Underwood for Guest Actress in a Drama for her cameo appearance on “The Young and the Restless”; “All My Children” vet Thorsten Kaye won Guest Actor in a Drama for his recurring role on NBC’s “Smash”; R&B star Ashanti won Worst Supporting Actress in a Drama for “Army Wives”; “ER” vet Anthony Edwards won Worst Actor in a Drama for ABC’s midseason futuristic flop “Zero Hour”; Lindsay Lohan won Worst Actress in a Miniseries, Movie, or Special for her role as Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s “Liz and Dick”; Miley Cyrus won Worst Guest Actress in a Comedy for her role in “Two and a Half Men”, and could be on her way back for more prizes in 2014, after her performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards last month.
“After the VMA’s, it was pretty clear that this is not the last we’ve seen of Miley at the Silver Garbage Awards,” Curtiss joked.
The Silver Garbage Award winners were announced on the eve of the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which air tomorrow night on CBS, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.  On this podcast, Dracula and Cletus announce the Silver Garbage Award winners.
