'Restless', 'Hospital', 'Days', 'Bad', and 'Sex' lead Bryan Award Nominations
There is a lot of drama to go around at this year's Bryan Award nominations, with the backstabbing of daytime leading the way in nominations, as recent Daytime Emmy champ "The Young and the Restless" hauled in 29 nominations, leading all programs, daytime or primetime, as the 14th Annual Bryan Award Nominations were announced on Thursday morning.
The longest-running active daytime soap "General Hospital" is not far behind with one fewer nomination than Y&R with 28 nods, and "Days of Our Lives", last year's Bryan Award winner for Daytime Drama Series with 25 nominations. All three will compete in the Outstanding Daytime Drama Category.
Tied for the most-nominated primetime program with 19 nominations are "Masters of Sex", Showtime's provocative skein about 1950s sex researchers, and "Breaking Bad", which wrapped up its five-season run last fall.
Leading the way with laughs in the Comedy races are four-time defending Emmy champ "Modern Family", and CBS's one-season wonder "The Crazy Ones" with 18 nominations each. "The Crazy Ones", which co-starred Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar as a father and daughter in an advertising agency won over with critics and fans, but was cancelled in May due to production costs.
"'The Crazy Ones' was one of those great shows that left us too soon," said Bryan Awards host and creator Bryan Curtiss. CBS was foolish to cancel the show at the last minute. It was a show that show have been on for five or six seasons, and been an Emmy powerhouse."
Also with 18 nominations is the most-nominated longform program of the year, HBO's Memorial Day weekend movie "The Normal Heart", based off of Larry Kramer's Tony-winning play about the early days of the AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s, with nominations for Outstanding Miniseries or Made for Television Movie, Actor, Supporting Actress, and four of the six nominees for Longform Supporting Actor.
In addition to "Modern Family", the Comedy Series race is represented by "The Big Bang Theory", "Brooklyn Nine-Nine", "Girls", "Louie", "Orange is the New Black", and "Veep".
The nominees for Best Drama Series are "The Americans", "Breaking Bad", "Downton Abbey", "Game of Thrones", "House of Cards", "Mad Men", and "Parenthood".
Joining "The Normal Heart" in the Best Miniseries or Made for Television Movie category are "American Horror Story: Coven", "Clear History", "Fargo", and "The White Queen".
Winners will be announced in a two-part special on WCRS-FM Columbus (Ohio) on August 4 and 11 at 8PM ET. Winners in the technical categories will be announced on August 2. You can listen to the Bryan Awards on http://www.wcrsfm.org.
