On Sunday night from Radio City Music Hall (not the Beacon Theatre), the 67th Annual Tony Awards will air live on CBS, hosted for the third straight year by Neil Patrick Harris. The Tony Awards honor the best of Broadway from the past year in plays and musicals. This year, the musical “Kinky Boots” leads with 13 nominations in a neck-and-neck race with “Matilda”, which has 12 nominations. All four Best Musical nominees were musical adaptations of movies, which is a first in the 67-year history of Broadway’s big honor (the other Best Musical nominees are “Bring It On: The Musical” and “A Christmas Story: The Musical”). In the last 15 years, most of the Best Musical winners (“The Lion King”, “The Producers”, “Thoroughly Modern Millie”, “Hairspray”, “Spamalot”, “Billy Elliot”, and last year’s winner “Once”) were musicals that were based off of movies. In the Best Play race, it seems like Christopher Durang’s “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” is an absolute lock to win Best Play for the legendary playwright.
