‘GH’, ‘Americans’, ‘Candelabra’, ‘Newsroom’, ‘Y&R’ Lead Bryan Award Nominations

July 8, 2013
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The 13th Annual Bryan Awards were admitted into General Hospital in Port Charles, New York on Monday night, where the long-running daytime drama received a leading 31 Bryan Award Nominations, including Best Soap, when the nominations for the Bryan Awards were announced live on "The DJBC Happy Hour" radio program in Columbus, Ohio.

GH, which was almost cancelled last year, turned 50 in April, and leads in overall nominations for the second straight year.  The show has eight of the twelve Guest Acting nominees for Daytime (four each in Guest Actor and Actress).  Not far behind GH in the Daytime races is "The Young and the Restless", which celebrated its 40th Anniversary in March.  Y&R has 24 nominations, including three for Lead Actor, and posthumous nods for Jeanne Cooper (Lead Actress) and Bonnie Franklin (Guest Actress) who both passed away this spring.  Joining GH and Y&R in the Daytime Soap category are the other two network soaps "The Bold and the Beautiful" and "Days of Our Lives", which have 18 and 14 nominations, respectively.  The online revivals of "All My Children" and "One Life to Live", which debuted in late April, received only one and two nominations respectively.

In the Primetime field, the race is on in the New Series category, as that race appears to be Russians vs. Newsmen, as "The Americans" edges "The Newsroom" as the two most-nominated dramas and first-year programs with 24 and 20 nominations, respectively.  "The Americans" is F/X's drama about KGB agents posing as married travel agents in the early 1980s, and "The Newsroom" is HBO's sleeper hit drama about the production of a cable news show.

Both "The Americans" and "The Newsroom" are Drama Series nominees, where they will be joined by "Breaking Bad", "Downton Abbey", "Game of Thrones", last year's New Series champ "Homeland" and defending Drama champ "Mad Men".

Joining "The Americans" and "The Newsroom" in the New Series race are "Elementary", CBS's Americanized version of "Sherlock Holmes"; "The Following", Fox's breakout thriller starring Kevin Bacon; "Inside Amy Schumer", Comedy Central's breakout sketch show which debuted in April; "Legit", F/X's comedy about a comedian trying to go the straight and narrow path; "The Mindy Project", Fox's show about an OB/GYN doctor balancing her personal life and professional life; "Mystery Diners", Food Network's show about the restaurant business; and "Nashville", ABC's critically acclaimed drama about country music singers.

In the Comedy race, two-time defending Comedy Series champion "Modern Family" leads all comedies with 15 nominations in an open race, fielding much competition from network shows like "The Big Bang Theory" and "New Girl" and cable shows like "Girls" and "Louie".  Those five shows are all nominated in the Comedy Series race with "Parks and Recreation" rounding out that category.

In the Longform races, it's a period piece battle between a legendary pianist, an insane asylum, and the Great War.  "Behind the Candelabra", HBO's Memorial Day weekend film about pianist Liberace's rocky romance with his young chauffeur leads all longform programs with 20 nominations.  The second season of "American Horror Story", "American Horror Story: Asylum", which took place in and out of an insane asylum in the mid 1960s, has 17 nominations.  HBO's "Parade's End", a miniseries about a doctor fighting in the first World War, has 16 nominations.

"This year, the Bryan Awards is coming of age," said Bryan Awards creator Bryan Curtiss.  "Over the years, there have been shows that have clinged on to the landscape of 'The Bryan Awards', such as 'Gilmore Girls', 'As the World Turns', 'The West Wing', '24', 'Mad Men', and 'Arrested Development'."  The latter show returned to Netflix after a seven-year hiatus, failed to make the cut in the Comedy Series race, but gained seven nominations, all in acting categories.

The 13th Annual Bryan Awards will air on WCRS-FM in Columbus, Ohio in "The DJBC Happy Hour" timeslot on August 19, 26, and September 2.  For more information on WCRS, go to http://www.wcrsfm.org.
